pass the butter

my mom sent this to me ... i LOVE butter. and here are more reasons why you should too!

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?
  • Both have the same amount of calories.
  • Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
  • Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
  • Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
  • Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few ... Only because they are added!
  • Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
  • Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine...

  • Very high in Trans fatty acids.
  • Triple risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
  • Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.
  • Lowers quality of breast milk.
  • Decreases immune response.
  • Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC.. This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself: Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Let me start by saying that I agree that margarine is a vile, synthetic, trans-fatty plague which I never spend my good money on.

That said, the fact that it's one molecule away from plastic shouldn't necessarily be the strongest argument against it. Oxygen (O2) which we need to survive is only one molecule away from ozone (O3) which impedes lung function. Carbon dioxide (CO2) which our bodies produce and which plants need to grow is one molecule from carbon monoxide (CO) which is highly toxic. In short, one molecule can make a big difference.

Not big enough, in margarine's case. :)

I agree with Kimberly about the 1 molecule thing, I was going to say the same thing.

BUT that said, I detest margarine and love (probably too much) butter. It makes your baked goods so much better than margarine or shortening ever could.

A friend of mine who is an older, retired doctor said he would never ever eat butter because it has a shelf life of 97 years. "If something lasts that long on the shelf, why would you want it to last that long in your blood?"

Yeah, I'm with you. We went margarine during the cheap years but a couple years back switched back, it's just so much better. We switched back purely based off of the whole lets try to eat things as close to their natural state as possible. Whole grains, veggies, fruits, lean means, etc. Margarine didn't really make the cut in the natural food list. We are not perfect but we can only try. Potato chips are almost natural, right?

I actually read all of that about butter and margarine....and as sad as it is...i still by it! Man, lets face it...when margarine is only a third of the price of butter it's hard not to buy it. Besides it's not like I eat lots of it. I would say Adam does because he always has to put it on his vegetables. Anyways...I won't lie....it does still grose me out a little when I think about how it is practically plastic.

Amen sister friend- you go girl! Costco is the best place to buy butter by the way- they always have it for a good price... not as cheap as margarine but well worth it, no??

I confess, I'm with Rachel. It's such an easy way to save money that I buy it too. That's why I had to do some research when I read this to see if it was really time to bite the bullet and make the switch and found this which made me feel a little better:

Thanks for the info. I knew there was a reason I hated margarine. And besides, it sort of tastes like the inside of my fridge.

i love butter...my argument has been for a while that butter has less crap (i.e. preservatives, etc) than marg...yay for good choices
