CSPIA ... a.k.a. "national bankruptcy day"

i've just been assuming that everyone else knows about this ridiculous law that is going to be effective on february 10th. then i was chatting with my mom and sister last weekend and realized that not everyone reads blogs and forums regarding manufacturing or selling.
...
not sure if you will be affected? if you manufacture anything for children under 12 .... if you sell anything for children under 12 ... if you BUY anything for children under 12 ... basically this affects EVERYONE!
...
the law will require anything intended for those under 12 to be tested for lead. it sounds good, but the reality is that it will negatively affect many businesses. protecting our children is important, unfortunately cspia will not accomplish that.

You can read my favorite article at Boutique Cafe, and here is the 2nd article in the series ... Please please please spread the word!

A friend of mine makes baby items and read this law carefully to see how it would apply to her. It does not apply to one of a kind items, thrift stores, or consignment. Nearly everything that is hand made is one of a kind.

The CPSIA released a statement clarifying their position: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09086.html

everything that is handmade is NOT one of a kind ... sure there are some exemptions, but MOST will be affected.

Obviously, since chemicals are involved, I hear rumblings in the industry. (A) I don't think it'll be as bad as everyone fears, and (B) It probably will get tweaked and reformed.

Change is needed. Extreme change is not.

i don't think it will be as bad either, but i think people should be informed. most people i've talked to have never even heard about it.

there have already been changes since the crafting community has started to speak up, so i'm sure it will continue.

i thought i read that cotton does not need to be tested for lead so then it wouldnt affect most clothes being sold. that is what i read on etsy a few weeks ago and thought that was the newest position. is that true???
